Children's Nursing Research Unit

The Children’s Nursing Research Unit
Children and their families are at the heart of the development of the Children’s Nursing Research Unit at Alder Hey which was launched in 2008. The Unit is leading and contributing to multidisciplinary studies whilst celebrating the particular contribution that children’s nurses bring to research.  It is a collaboration between Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, the University of Central Lancashire, EdgeHill University and Liverpool John Moores University. The CNRU is helping to create clinical research careers for nurses.

Professor Bernie Carter is on secondment from the University of Central Lancashire and is the Director of the CNRU.  Dr Caroline Sanders, Dr Lucy Bray and Dr Lyvonne Tume (Senior Clinical Research Fellows) and Clare van Miert (Clinical Research Fellow) are members of the core research team.

The current students supported by the unit are Kim Bird, Jennie Craske, Sarah Doyle and Niki Rowe.

Administrative support is provided by Adele Garvey.


Mission Statement
The CNRU will be collaborative and inclusive and work across boundaries and across institutions. It will lead/ contribute to multidisciplinary studies whilst celebrating the particular contribution that children’s nurses bring to research. In particular the CNRU will do research that:

l      benefits children and families,

l      is collaborative and inclusive,

l      nurses will want to get involved in and which is inspired by nurses, children and their families.
