Alder Hey - Home

About us

Alder Hey was founded in 1914, and is regarded as the largest children's hospital in Western Europe. The hospital is the birthplace of modern paediatric anaesthesia; neonatal surgery and children's cardiac surgery were pioneered in the 1940's and 1950's.

Sir Robert Jones is remembered as a great pioneer of orthopaedic surgery, and was instrumental in the establishment of Alder Hey as a specialist children's hospital.

The hospital is one of the few with a University Institute of Child Health. There are 20 specialist services, which include bone marrow transplant, burns, cleft lip and palate, cancer, renal replacement and spinal injuries. The supra-regional services include cardiology and craniofacial surgery.

The first paediatric intensive care consultant in the UK was appointed to Alder Hey. Royal patronage was granted in 1985 and Alder Hey became a first wave Trust in 1991. More recently, the Trust has become involved in the National Booked Admissions Pilot Programme. This Trust is a major community provider of health care, operating on 38 different sites, providing a wide range of community child care health services, as well collaborative services with Social Services.

The Trust has a first class reputation for saving the lives of sick children and a proud history of medical achievement and clinical innovation. It is an international centre of excellence, treating more than 200,000 children a year from 17 North West health authorities, 2 health authorities in North Wales and Shropshire, and also provides significant paediatric support to the Isle of Man. As well as being a tertiary referral hospital for many conditions, with paediatric specialists for most areas in children's medicine, it also provides the general paediatric service and clinics for the locality.

The services provided by Alder Hey and the hospital activity is detailed in the Trust Profile (see right menu). The Trust is also a teaching hospital involved in the training of 600+ medical students. In addition, the Trust is a centre for hosting national postgraduate medical examinations (MRCPCH).
