Ray Clarke worked in the civil service in Ireland for a year after leaving school before deciding to study medicine. He qualified in Dublin in 1981 and trained in Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery in Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield and for a short time in Brooklyn New York. He was a consultant at both the Royal Liverpool and Alder Hey but found that as a passionate advocate for the best services for children and their families he could best serve their interests by working exclusively as a paediatric ENT doctor. Ray is an enthusiastic teacher of students and young doctors and works as a Senior Lecturer in the University of Liverpool, helping to oversee the training and development of the next generation of doctors. In 2004 Ray was awarded the ‘Silver Scalpel’ as best teacher of surgery in the NHS by the Association of Surgeons in Training and the Chief Medical Officer . He has written a number of textbooks for students and often lectures to and examines young doctors both in the UK and overseas. Ray’s main clinical interests are in all areas of ENT conditions in children, especially airway obstruction, head and neck problems and looking after children with special needs and their families.
