Departmental Role

 

Dr Cunliffe is lead clinician of the Pain Service which has expanded to include managing children undergoing sedation withdrawal following discharge from PICU, long term management of children with chronic pain, conducting ward rounds and pain management and guidelines development.

 

Qualifications

 

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (1976)

Anaesthetic fellowship (1981)

Awarded fellowship in pain medicine from Royal College of Anaesthetists (2010)

 

Clinical Experience

 

Dr Cunliffe trained as a fellow in paediatric anaesthesia for 1 year at Alder Hey and Myrtle Street Hospitals during 1981 and 1982 and for 1 year at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto during 1984 and 1985.

 

She was appointed a consultant to Alder Hey and Myrtle Street Children’s Hospitals in 1987 and initially anaesthetised children for cardiac surgery and scoliosis surgery. In 1993, she gave up cardiac anaesthesia and concentrated on trying to establish better pain management for children coming to the hospital which included bidding for and gaining funding to start an Acute Pain Service.
