Over 100 families joined in a Family Fun Day at Alder Hey on Saturday to show their support for the hospital’s cardiac service.

Patients and their families were able to enjoy a variety of fun activities including; face painting, nail painting and hand massages from Woodlands Spa, a ‘smile’ clinic promoting good oral hygiene, a healthy heart stand and a special football workshop with Everton in the Community. With the help of an Alder Hey artist, youngsters also helped to create a spectacular display by making their own clay hearts. Rolling up the day was a fantastic drum workshop as visitors young and old showed off their drumming skills!

Alongside the family fun, visitors were also able to find out more about the current Safe and Sustainable consultation. A public consultation is currently taking place to determine the future of children’s congenital heart services in England. Alder Hey is included in all four proposed options to reduce the number of hospital’s providing children’s heart surgery from 11 to six or seven. However, staff at the hospital are urging people within the North West to still take part in the consultation which ends on 1st July 2011 to show their support for Alder Hey.

Prem Venugopal (Cardiac Consultant) said: “It’s really important that as many people as possible have their say on the proposed changes. At this moment we are included in every option but this situation could yet change, depending on the responses to the consultation. It’s vital that as many people as possible show their support to ensure that a leading cardiac service remains on the doorstep of those living within the North West region.”
